Mary Ann Dixon Hogue
As a child I always l loved drawing but not encouraged to broaden my love of art.
My mother wanted me to develop any music talent I had, which, unfortunately,
was slight indeed. In 1949, I married Cy Hogue and after our children were up a
bit, I enjoyed a few night classes for oil painting and figure drawing with Claude
Howell. It was years before I became serious about art and at that time I took
several classes at UNCW – Design and Color for years under Claude Howell; Live
Drawing, Printmaking and Pastels under Don Furst. In the 80s I started doing pastel
portraits, and I attended workshops with Daniel Green and Leslie DeMille. For six
years, I broadened my experience with oils and pastels studying under Robert Osborn
of the Ringling School of Art’s Summer and Fall session at Wildeacres near Little
Switzerland. I have attended workshops under Becky Patman, Wolfe Kahn, Betty Brown,
Gladys Farris, Bob LeRoy, James Kerr, Rick McClure, John Poon and others and continue
to take workshops now and then. I have won several awards including Blue Ribbons, but
to me it’s the joy of painting that gives me the most satisfaction. I have done a few
watercolors and some pottery, but oil and pastels are my favorites. I have especially
enjoyed my portraits which are primarily pastels.
I grew up in Raleigh and when I first moved here, I truly missed the rolling land but now
I love the pine trees, the live oaks, the open skies and the water of the Wilmington area.
